Measured straight across, from the outer-most point of the shoulder.

Measured across the body, from armpit-to-armpit.

The fit is true to size. I ordered a medium, and it fits comfortably without being too tight or too loose. The length is perfect and doesn't ride up when you lift your arms. The color is exactly as shown in the photos, and it hasn’t faded after a few washes. Perfect cottage sweater.
